The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
